What is happiness?

Did you know that the word “happy” is one of the top 1000 frequently used words? Many people spend their lives in the pursuit of happiness. Some believe that happiness is linked to social status, money, belongings and/or achieving a certain goal. For instance, I will be happy when I’ve got a decent job. I will be happy when I meet someone in my life. I will be happy once I’ve resolved my current situation.

There are many self help books out there telling you what to do to be happy. Have you ever wondered what happiness really is?

Please feel free to disagree with me, but I genuinely believe that happiness is not “real”. Happiness is a state of mind that should be maintained through commitment and simple practices in our daily lives.

The pursuit of happiness is like looking for the sun on a cloudy day. The sun is always shining. However, it is hidden behind thick clouds of problems, anxiety and worries. Creating happy moments in your life is analogous to punching holes in the clouds so that you get some rays of sunshine. It doesn’t matter how small or large the holes are. It doesn’t matter how long it will take for the wind to blow and cover those holes again. The truth is, the more holes you have drilled in the clouds at one particular time, the more you feel the sun piercing through the cloud.

I define happiness as those rays of sunshine. It is not constant but attainable. If you want that feeling to last, then you must be prepared to taking daily actions that will bring more sun in your life.
